A Pioneer in Japanese Winemaking

Established in 1963, Ikeda Wine Castle holds the distinction of being Japan’s first municipal winery. The institute developed unique grape varieties suited for wines with rich acidity, particularly designed for long-term aging. Operating as an independent financial institution under Ikeda Town’s management, a portion of the winery’s profits contributes directly to the town’s economy, local industry, and community development.

From Agricultural Crisis to Wine Innovation

Ikeda Town faced severe agricultural setbacks following the 1952 Tokachi-oki earthquake and consecutive cold weather events in the following year. Seeking a stable industrial base, Mayor Maruya Kaneyasu launched the New Rural Construction Project Plan in 1960. By 1961, the town began cultivating wild grapes, and in 1962, the Ikeda Town Agricultural Products Processing Research Institute was established to research these grapes.

In 1963, Ikeda Town became the first municipality in Japan to obtain a license for alcohol production and testing, and research confirmed that the local wild grapes belonged to the Amurensis subtype, ideal for high-quality wine. By 1964, the Ikeda Grape and Wine Research Institute was fully operational, handling grape cultivation, research, and wine production. A permanent license for fruit liquor production was secured in 1971, and wine sales grew rapidly, prompting the construction of a larger facility.

The Birth of the “Wine Castle”

To accommodate growing production and attract tourists, the town built a European-style castle building, nicknamed the Wine Castle, funded through municipal bonds. The combination of wine, architecture, and tourism was a success, allowing the town to repay the loan on schedule.

DCTgarden IKEDA

In 2003, a major renovation transformed the Wine Castle into a full-fledged tourist attraction. Updates included a new factory for bottling, shopping areas, and elevators for easier access. The site also houses the DREAMS COME TRUE gallery (DCTgarden IKEDA), displaying costumes from the local singer Miwa Yoshida. Since 2009, the castle and gallery have jointly operated the DREAMS COME TRUE VINEYARD, further blending Hokkaido’s wine culture with local music heritage.

Team Nicerio visits Ikeda Wine Castle

My family and I visited Ikeda Wine Castle for the first time on November 5, 2023, the third day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. This also marked my 734th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This winery was our first destination in the town of Ikeda. During our visit, we did a free tour of the winery. We were able to see the underground aging room and also enjoyed some time at the shopping area. We wanted to dine at the restaurant, but it was still early for lunch.

It’s FREE to enter and explore Ikeda Wine Castle. However, it is highly recommended that you bring cash just in case you wish to buy a wine as a souvenir or dine in the Wine Castle Restaurant.

Ikeda Wine Castle Operating Hours

Ikeda Wine Castle is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. It is closed during the New Year Holidays.

The Wine Castle Restaurant, located on the fourth floor, is open from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with last orders taken at 4:30 PM. On Saturdays, the restaurant stays open later, until 8:00 PM, with last orders at 7:00 PM. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Today, Ikeda Wine Castle offers a tour course, shopping areas, restaurants serving wine and local specialties, and hosts events like the Ikeda Town Autumn Wine Festival. The castle is also famous for its stunning sunset views, recognized as one of the Top 100 Sunsets in Japan.
