10 Things to Do in Pippu

Pippu (比布町) is a town in the Kamikawa Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name of the town is derived from the Ainu language, but there are various theories. According to the theory proposed by Masahi Shirasato, it is said that "pippi-pet" (rolling stones in the river) evolved into "pippet", "pip" or "pipi". Another theory suggests that it originated from "pi-o-p" (a place with many stones). It’s good to note that the town is the only municipality in Japan that starts with the letter P.

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Pippu. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is commonly seen around town.

2. Check out the Pippu Pokemon manhole cover. It is installed outside the Pippu Station, along with the unique Pippu manhole cover. The Pippu Pokemon manhole cover features Hokkaido’s Pokemon Ambassador – Alolan Vulpix and a Pokemon with a name that almost sounds like the town’s name – Piplup.

Explore the Former Suzuki Residence (旧鈴木邸) to appreciate the architectural magnificence of one of Pippu's cherished cultural landmarks. This historic house once belonged to Tomonori Suzuki, the former mayor of Pippu Village, and was honored with a prestigious accolade at the 24th Architecture Award ceremony by the Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings in Asahikawa, showcasing its significant architectural heritage.

4. Stroll around and enjoy the fresh air at Pippu Centennial Memorial Park (百年記念公園). There is a baseball field, a gymnasium, and a forested area inside this vast park.

5. Visit the Pippu Local History Museum (比布町 郷土資料館) and learn about the history of Pippu town. However, this museum is only open during the weekdays and is closed during the winter. If you wish to visit, you should contact the Pippu Board of Education at ☏0166-85-2262 at least a day before your desired visit.

6. Visit the Pippu Shrine (比布神社). You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you collect them.

7. Take a dip and relax at the onsen of Yuyu Pippu Hot Spring Inn (遊湯ぴっぷ). You may choose to do the day trip bath which costs only 500 yen or stay overnight in one of its rooms.

8. Go strawberry picking at the strawberry farms of Pippu like Fujimoto Farm (藤本農園) and Makino Farm (牧野農園) to name a few. Strawberry picking season in Pippu is from late June to early July.

9. Visit the historic Pippu Station (比布駅). The younger generation probably didn’t know but Pippu Station was once featured in the 1980 commercial for Pip Erekiban. It gave the station a huge following from people from all over Japan. Today, it’s a place to see the Pippu Pokemon manhole cover and the unique manhole cover of Pippu.

10. Ski at Pippu Ski Resort (ぴっぷスキー場). It is not as big as the famous ski resorts of Hokkaido but it is visited by people from all over the prefecture. It’s a great place to practice skiing. During spring to autumn, the top of the hill doubles as an observation deck.
