Onishibetsu Shrine - Hokkaido

Onishibetsu Shrine (鬼志別神社) is the main shrine of the village. It is located at 158 Onishibetsu Nishimachi, Sarufutsu Village in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Onishibetsu Shrine is located in Sarufutsu - dubbed as the Northernmost Village in Japan. The village was established in 1878 (Meiji 11). However, the village was placed under the administration of Soya District until 1923 when it was given its administrative power. It can be assumed that the Onishibetsu Shrine was also established by the settlers soon after.

Sadly, little is written about Onishibetsu Shrine. Small details about its history can be seen on the shrine grounds. According to one stone tablet, Bato Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is enshrined in Onishibetsu Shrine. You can also see the Shunroku Hata Loyalty Monument inside the shrine grounds.

Aside from that, you would also see a pair of komainu on the shrine grounds. The statues are quite new. As for the main shrine, it was built using the Shinmei-zukuri architectural style.

My family and I visited Onishibetsu Shrine for the first time during the 4th day of our 5-day "Drive Up North" road trip last August 15, 2022. This was my 287th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The shrine was included in our itinerary since we made a point of visiting the main shrine of each destination that we visit in Hokkaido. It is a way for us to honor the people and cultures of each location. My daughter and I offered a prayer and made a wish during our quick visit.

It’s FREE to enter and explore Onishibetsu Shrine grounds.

Onishibetsu Shrine Operating Hours:

Onishibetsu Shrine grounds are open 24/7. However, the best time to visit is in the morning as the shrine grounds are not well-lit at night. 

Why visit Onishibetsu Shrine?

Onishibetsu Shrine currently is the main shrine of Sarufutsu Village. It is a place where you can offer some prayers and pay respect.

Getting to Onishibetsu Shrine:

 

Ride the Soya Bus from Asahikawa City to Onishibetsu Terminal. From there, you can simply walk to the shrine.

There is 1 round trip per day. However, you need to make a reservation.

Located in Barangay San Pedro in Sto. Tomas in the province of Batangas, the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio is a pilgrimage site dedicated and inspired by Saint Padre Pio.
