Kaizuka (貝塚市) is a city in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Kaizuka City was established on April 1, 1889, and became a city on October 1, 1943. The city is historically known for its production of wooden combs made from boxwood. The kanji used for its name kai () means shellfish and zuka () means mound. 

For those planning to visit the city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Kaizuka City:

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Kaizuka City. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common around the city.

2. Visit the Kanda Shrine (感田神社). It’s located near Kaizuka Station and can easily be reached on foot. It’s a popular shrine among locals so please make sure to keep the peace or the place. This shrine also celebrates the Taikodai Festival so if you time your visit in July then you might be able to witness it. You can also pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Stroll around Mizuma Park (水間公園). This vast park is on a hill. It is a good place to go to if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. This park is a popular hanami destination for locals in spring.

4. Spend a quiet afternoon or early morning at Nishikinohama Beach Park (二色の浜海水浴場). The beach is clean and is a great place to watch planes come and go from Kansai International Airport. It’s also a nice place to have a barbecue.

5. Visit the Shizen Yugakukan (自然遊学館). This museum with a unique-looking façade has plenty of exhibits about animals. It has free parking and admission. Aside from that, there is a park and playground behind it so it’s a perfect destination if you have kids.

6.  Go strawberry picking at Tanaka Ichigo (たなかの苺). The best time to visit it is in early April. For 60 minutes, you can eat as many strawberries as you want aside from that you can also have unlimited dips, cakes, and drinks.

7. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Sobura Forest Garden Minami (そぶらフォレストガーデン南). This campsite is up in the mountains of Southeastern Kaizuka City. It’s a perfect place to escape the noise of the city. 


Okumizuma Onsen (奥水間温泉)

8.  Take a dip at the onsen of Okumizuma Onsen (奥水間温泉). They offer a day trip and overnight options. Okumizuma Onsen is a 3-star hotel located in the mountains south of the city proper so it’s another perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Aside from the onsen, there is also a pool worth trying during the hot scorching summers. 


Matsuba Onsen Taki-no-yu (松葉温泉 滝の湯)

9. Take a dip at the onsen of Matsuba Onsen Taki-no-yu (松葉温泉 滝の湯). There is a day trip and an overnight option. Matsuba Onsen Taki-no-yu is a 3-star hotel that is located on the wooded hillside next to the Kikikawa River. The outdoor bath is amazing. Aside from that, the gozen meal is also worth trying.

10. Visit the historic Mizumadera (水間寺). This temple dates back to the 8th century. This temple has a beautiful 3-tiered pagoda. The temple grounds are also known for its cherry blossoms in spring. When you visit, don’t forget to avail of its goshuin if you’re collecting them.
