10 Things to Do in Embetsu

10 Things to Do in Embetsu

Embetsu (遠別町) is a town in the Rumoi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name is said to be Ainu in origin. It has three alternative meanings: Wen-pet, which means "bad river," We-bet, which means "forked river," and E-ye-pet, which means "meeting place river," since Embetsu was a meeting site between seashore Ainu and Teshio Mountains Ainu.

For those planning to visit Embetsu to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Embetsu:

1. Take a picture of Embetsu’s manhole cover. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common and can be seen around Embetsu town proper.

Roadside Station Embetsu Fujimi (道の駅 えんべつ富士見)

2. Visit the Embetsu Roadside Station / Roadside Station Embetsu Fujimi (道の駅 えんべつ富士見) and buy products that are made from Embetsu. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet.

Embetsu Local Museum

3. Visit the Embetsu Local Museum located in the Marumatsu district. However, it is only open from May 1st to October 31st. There are guided tours but you need to call and reserve 3 days before your visit.

Embetsu Shrine

4. Visit the Embetsu Shrine. You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.

5. Witness the portable shrines for children and children’s baton twirling performances parade around town during the Embetsu Shrine Festival every July 14-16.

Fujimigaoka Park Camping Ground

6. Stay overnight and camp at the Fujimigaoka Park Camping Ground. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one of the cabins here.

Embetsu River Kasen Park Camping Ground

7. Stay overnight and camp at Embetsu River Kasen Park Camping Ground. On a beautiful clear day, it’s a good place to watch the sunset. Minakuru Beach is nearby so you can also take a dip if you want to.

The old roadside station at Fujimigaoka Park

8. Visit Fujimigaoka Park on the outskirts of Embetsu. There is an observation deck, mini golf course, campsite, and a forested area to stroll around and be one with nature. The roadside station is also nearby so you won’t have to worry about where to park your car.

9. Walk along the elevated wooden walkways and explore parts of the Gimpo Primeval Flower Garden. Visit from mid-June to late June and hundreds of bright yellow daylilies in full bloom. If you visit on a clear day, then you will be able to see Rishiri Island.

Asahi Onsen

10. Go to Asahi Onsen and take a dip in its famed Onsen. Heads up though as this place is tucked away deep in the forest. Regardless, you can reach it by driving along Route 971.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Embetsu gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this scenic coastal town soon.

  1. Asahi Onsen is a must visit but you should have your own vehicle. I rode there with my pals several years back and that picture brings back memories.
