As previously stated, the Wakkanai Forest Park Camping Ground is free to use, thus there is no need to make a reservation. It also does not have a manager in charge, but it is cleaned by locals during the day. But, before you go, make sure to check the Wakkanai City website for updates on bear activity in the region, because the camp is closed anytime there is a bear sighting. Here's the 👉LINK👈.

This is probably the best spot to camp as it has an awesome view of the city. It's at the eastern edge of the camping ground

There is a walking path on the eastern side of the camping ground. However, there were some cases of bear sightings in this area.

My daughter and I went on an early morning stroll along the walking path.

Heads up though, unlike most camping grounds here in Hokkaido that have a nearby onsen, the nearest onsen to Wakkanai Forest Park Camping Ground is the Wakkanai Onsen Dome which is about 9 kilometers away.

My family and I camped at Wakkanai Forest Park Camping Ground for the first time last August 13, 2022, my 41st weekend here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was the 2nd day of our 5-day Drive Up North road trip. The campsite parking area was jam-packed when we arrived. Luckily there was one last spot available when we arrived. The prime camping spots were all taken though so we pitched our tent at the northern edge of the camping ground. In a way, I was a bit anxious as there was a bear sighting in the area a month prior. There were also mosquitos and noisy children playing even at night. Regardless, it was still an enjoyable stay. Who would complain about a clean free campsite right?
