10 Things to Do in Tomamae

10 Things to Do in Tomamae

Tomamae (苫前町) is a town in the Rumoi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name is derived from toma-oma-i which is an Ainu phrase for “a certain thing or place”.

For those planning to visit the town of Tomamae to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Tomamae:

Tomamae Manhole Cover

1. Take a picture of Tomamae’s unique manhole cover. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole cover designs. One is in Tomamae town proper, and the other is near Tomamae Commercial High School in Kotanbetsu.

Tomamaeda Bear

2. Go to Tomamae Town Hall to take a photo with the famed Tomamaeda Bear (とままえだベアー). It is probably the most popular landmark of Tomamae.

Tomamae Shrine

3. Visit Tomamae Shrine (苫前神社). You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.

4. Attend the Tomamae Shrine Festival held every July 5 - 8 of the year. Enjoy watching the portable shrine processions and other special activities planned for the event.

Tomamae Yūhigaoka Mirai Port Park

5. Pitch a tent and camp for the night at Tomamae Yūhigaoka Mirai Port Park. It's near the sea so with the sea breeze, it's best to pitch a tent here in summer.

Tomamae Town Museum

6. Go to Tomamae Town Museum and learn about the rich history of the town of Tomamae. There are hundreds of interesting displays here. There are also plenty of taxidermied bears on display.

Tomamae Roadside Station / Roadside Station Fu-W Tomamae

7. Visit the Tomamae Roadside Station / Roadside Station Fu-W Tomamae. You can buy souvenirs there, and order the sweet shrimp bowl or yakisoba at Restaurant Fumu. You can also take a dip in the onsen at the roadside station. Aside from that, you can also get the roadside station stamp here.

Route 239

8. Drive along Route 239 and enjoy the beautiful view of the Sea of Japan. This route is also dubbed as the Ororon Line. There are some spots where you can park on the side of the road and take pictures of the scenery. One such place is near the Candle Rock Formations near the Kotanbetsu area.

Uehira Greenhill Wind Farm

9. Visit Uehira Greenhill Wind Farm and take photos of Tomamae’s famed wind turbines. Heads up, there are some areas which are off limits to the public.

Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident Reconstruction Location

10. Drive to Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident Reconstruction Location and learn more about Hokkaido’s most tragic bear attack. Don't forget to take a picture with the giant bear too.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Tomamae gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this scenic town soon.
