The Story of Mr. Beans

The museum is designed as the home and research laboratory of the fictional bean enthusiast Mamehata Takuo, affectionately called “Mr. Beans.” Visitors can explore exhibits featuring beans from around the world and discover creative bean-based recipes, making it both educational and entertaining for adults and children.

A Building with History

The Bean House building was originally constructed in 1952 as the office for the former Potato Field Original Seed Farm (now the Tokachi Seed Management Center Farm) in Kofuku-cho, Obihiro City. In 2005, it was relocated and restored to become the Nakasatsunai Village Bean Museum. The museum preserves the architectural charm of the mid-20th century while showcasing the agricultural heritage of Nakasatsunai Village. Later on, it was rebranded as the Tokachi Countryside Museum - Bean House.

My family and I visited the Tokachi Countryside Museum – Bean House for the first time on November 4, 2023, which was the second day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. This marked my 733^rd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. We enjoyed exploring the extensive displays of beans from Tokachi and around the world, making it a fun and educational experience for the whole family.

Getting to the Tokachi Countryside Museum

 

From Obihiro Station, head to platform 11 of the Obihiro Station Bus Terminal and board bus #60 Hiroo Line operated by the Tokichi Bus Company. Board down at  Michinoeki Nakasatsunai bus stop. 

From there, cross the street to reach the museum.
