History of Shihoro Shrine
The origins of Shihoro Shrine date back to October 20,
1924, when three townsmen—Takahashi Sotaro, Sakamoto Michio, and Oguchi
Tsurugoro—decided to establish a shrine for their growing community. They
received a portion of the spirits of the three pioneer gods from the former
Kanpeitaisha Sapporo Shrine and enshrined them in a modest building at Higashi
2-jo 2-chome.

As the Showa era began, Shihoro experienced rapid development and a rise in households. The community soon pushed for a more permanent and recognized shrine. In 1933, the Shihoro Shrine Construction Association was formed, and by December 25 of the same year, a new shrine was completed at its present location. The total construction cost was 3,700 yen, a significant investment for the era.

Following this, the shrine gained official recognition. On April
18, 1935, it was listed as an unranked shrine by the Ministry of Home
Affairs and later promoted to a village shrine on March 13, 1936.
In 1954, it was approved as a religious corporation, solidifying its
role in the community.

Modern Developments
Shihiro Shrine continued to grow and improve its facilities over
the decades. In 1965, a new shrine office was completed, followed by
major renovations in 1991, which included both the shrine building and
the shrine office. A relocation ceremony and a grand celebration were held the
same year, further cementing its importance to the town.

Team Nicerio visits Shihoro Shrine
My family and I visited Shihoro Shrine on November 3, 2023, the first day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. It also marked my 732nd day in Japan as an ALT with the JET Programme, making the visit even more meaningful. As part of our Hokkaido 179 travel goal, we make it a tradition to visit the central shrine of every municipality we explore for the first time. At Shihoro Shrine, we offered prayers and paid our respects, taking a quiet moment to connect with the town’s culture and spiritual heritage.
