Winter

Horokanai may be known for its snowy winters and famous buckwheat fields, but hidden within this quiet town is a hot spring with a surprisingly colorful past: Seiwa Onsen Luonto. Long before it became the modern recreation center that travelers enjoy today, this area once hosted a charming hot spring inn right in front of Masawa Onsen Station.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Back in the day, the hot spring inn was a simple detached house located right across the station. It was beloved by locals for its relaxed atmosphere and its signature dish, Jingisukan. Guests would gather around the grill and enjoy Hokkaido’s iconic lamb dish, sometimes wearing nothing but a towel around the waist. It was a quirky and memorable experience that reflected old Hokkaido culture.

Since Masawa Onsen Station closed during winter, the hot spring also shuts down during the cold months. Eventually, the spring dried up, and the inn finally closed its doors in May 1981. By 1986, the building was demolished, marking the end of an era.

The Rebirth: Seiwa Onsen Luonto

A new chapter began in 1994 when Horokanai Town Recreation Center Seiwa Onsen Luonto opened on the same site. In 1998, it was officially registered as a roadside station named Roadside Station Mori-to-Mizuumi-no-sato Horokanai, giving travelers a refreshing stopover in this quiet mountain region.

Modern Upgrades for Today’s Travelers

Seiwa Onsen Luonto received a major renovation in 2020, giving it a fresh new look while still maintaining its welcoming atmosphere. Visitors today can enjoy a free foot bath in the lobby, renovated open-air baths for both men and women, and a special heavy snow open-air bath that is available only during winter. The dining area was also renewed and reopened as Soba Dining Soba no Sato, where guests can savor handmade soba noodles crafted from Horokanai’s locally grown buckwheat throughout the year.

Hot Spring Quality

The hot spring water at Seiwa Onsen Luonto comes from a sodium-chloride spring, known for its warming and soothing effects.

  • Type: Sodium-chloride spring (neutral, hypotonic, cold mineral spring)
  • Source temperature: 7.6°C
  • pH level: 6.4 (neutral)
  • Color: Yellowish brown due to natural mineral deposits

Although we had visited the Horokanai Roadside Station a few years ago, it was only on February 24, 2024, that my family and I finally had the chance to take a dip and experience the onsen at Seiwa Onsen Luonto. It was my 845th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Despite the snowy weather, there were surprisingly many people enjoying the baths. Aside from relaxing in the soothing onsen, we also tried Horokanai’s famous soba, which was incredibly delicious.
