Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock Details

Tucked along the coastline of Shiraiwacho in Yoichi, Hokkaido, are two striking sea stacks known as Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock. Standing side by side in shallow waters just 10 meters from the shore, these natural formations have captivated visitors with their unique shapes, geological contrast, and symbolic charm.

A Natural Wonder with Cultural Symbolism

Ebisu Rock, the slimmer and slightly more precarious of the two, rises from deeper waters and narrows near the waterline, creating a dramatic silhouette. Closer to the shore is Daikoku Rock, broader and sturdier in form. The rocks differ in appearance from the surrounding cliffs, composed of black, rounded andesite conglomerate; they stand in striking contrast to the white rhyolite pumice tuff of the cliffs nearby.

Locals and visitors alike affectionately refer to them as the Meoto Iwa, or Married Couple Rocks, due to their side-by-side positioning and contrasting yet complementary shapes — a symbol of harmony and partnership often seen in Japanese coastal folklore.

My family and I visited Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock on October 8, 2023, the second day of our 3-day “Sports Day 2023” road trip. It also happened to be my 706th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This was our first stop for today’s itinerary. There’s nothing much to do here but admire the beauty of the rocks and enjoy the view.

Why Visit Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock?

If you’re traveling through Yoichi or exploring the nearby coastlines, Ebisu and Daikoku Rocks make for a quiet but rewarding detour. These formations provide a peaceful and photogenic setting away from the usual tourist crowds—perfect for geology enthusiasts, lovers of coastal landscapes, or anyone seeking a symbolic photo stop.

Getting to Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock

By car

There’s no official parking lot, but you can park along the roadside near a cement or brick wall. From there, access to the beach is relatively easy. Look for a path to the right that leads down to a tunnel running under the main road. This tunnel provides beach access — but keep in mind that it may not be passable during high tide.

By bus

From Yoichi Station, make your way to the Yoichi Eki-mae bus stop and board the #20 Shakotan Line (Bikuni-bound) bus operated by Chuo Bus Company. Get off at Shiraiwacho bus stop and walk approximately 500 meters to reach Ebisu Rock and Daikoku Rock.
