Furubira (古平町) is a picturesque coastal town in Hokkaido’s Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Japan. The town is well known for its stunning coastline and popular camping sites. The origin of its name is debated, with several theories based on the town’s topography. It may derive from the Ainu words hure-pira, which means “red cliff”, or hur-pira, meaning “hill cliff”.
For those planning to visit this scenic
coastal town to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Furubira:
1. Be sure to take a photo of Furubira’s unique manhole cover designs. I spotted two distinctive designs, both commonly
seen around town. The colored version of one of them is also on display inside
the town hall.
2. Visit Furubira Ebisu Shrine (古平 恵比須神社), one of the
town’s main shrines. It’s a serene place to pay respects and offer prayers,
located right in the heart of Furubira. Please note that it is an unmanned
shrine, so goshuin are not available.
3. Visit Furubira Kotohira Shrine (琴平神社), one of the town’s main shrines and a
peaceful place to pay respects and offer prayers. This shrine was also a
filming location for the Netflix drama series “Beyond Goodbye.” It
offers a goshuin stamp, though visitors have noted that obtaining one can be
challenging.
4. Visit Furubira Town Hall (古平町役場), a modern facility that houses a
well-stocked library. You can also see the colored version of the town’s unique
manhole cover design here. In addition, the town hall offers the Furubira manhole card
for free.

Roadside Station Furubira “Tarako Museum”
5. Visit Roadside Station Furubira “Tarako
Museum” (道の駅ふるびら たらこミュージアム),
Hokkaido’s newest roadside station as of spring 2025. It is well known for its
tarako (pollock roe) products and the vibrant pink momo soft cream. Don’t
forget to collect the roadside station stamp during your visit!

Furubira Family Travel Village
6. Pitch a tent at Furubira Family Travel
Village (古平家族旅行村), one of the best
camping spots in the region. Please note that, as of this writing, the campsite
is temporarily closed due to a recent bear incident.

Sea of Japan Furubira Onsen Shiokaze
7. Take a relaxing soak at Sea of Japan
Furubira Onsen Shiokaze (日本海ふるびら温泉しおかぜ). The bathing fee is only 550 yen. The changing room is equipped
with coin lockers (with coin refunds) and free hair dryers. The onsen is
compact, featuring about seven washing areas, two indoor baths, one open-air
bath, a sauna, and a cold bath.
8. Visit Meiwa Shrine (明和神社) in spring to enjoy one of Hokkaido’s most
beautiful sakura displays. It is an unmanned shrine, so a goshuin is not
available.
9. Catch the breathtaking view of Setakumui Rock (セタカムイ岩) at sunset from the Setakamui Road Disaster Memorial Square. Known as one of Hokkaido’s premier sunset spots, the site offers stunning vistas of the rugged coastline as the sun dips below the horizon, casting golden and pink hues over the sea and rock formations—a perfect moment for photography and quiet reflection.
10. Attend the Tengu Fire Walking Ceremony during the Furubira Fire Festival, held every July 10th. After the annual festival, the portable shrine is carried to Hamamachi Ebisu Shrine, a temporary shrine site. Before entering the shrine grounds, a dramatic purification ritual takes place: Sarutahiko and the portable shrine pass through the flames of a bonfire made of burning sawdust three times, sending sparks soaring into the sky.
I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Furubira gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this scenic coastal town in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido.
