Makkari (真狩村) is a village located in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The village is located at the southern foot of Mt. Yotei. Its name came from the Ainu word "mak-kari-pet", meaning "River which flows around Mount Yōtei".

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Makkari. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover in the village. It's common around the village, particularly by Route 230.

2. Visit the Makkari Shrine (真狩神社). It’s the main shrine of Makkari. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here at any time of the day. If you plan to avail of the shrine’s goshuin, you should head to Rusutsu Shrine.

3. Buy any tofu products of Wakimizu no Sato, Makkari Tofu Kobo (湧水の里 真狩豆腐工房). The tofu here is made using the fresh spring water from Mt. Yotei.

4. Make sure to try the handmade soba at Ishimane Soba (そば屋 いし豆), a charming restaurant located just outside the village and near the base of Mt. Yotei. Note that they serve a limited number of bowls each day, so it's best to arrive early.

5. Stroll around Makkari Kasen Park (真狩河川公園). On a clear day, this riverside park offers an amazing view of Mt. Yotei. Don’t forget to take a photo of the bronze statue of Takashi Hosokawa, who is a popular Japanese enka singer.

6. Drive or walk along Route 97. It’s a road that goes “straight” to Mt. Yotei. On a clear day, you would get an unforgettable view of the mountain.

7. Stop by the Makkari Roadside Station, officially known as Roadside Station Makkari Flower Center (道の駅 真狩フラワーセンター). This station is famous for its flower-themed products and also houses the Takashi Hosokawa Memorial Museum. If you collect roadside station stamps, then make sure to visit during its opening hours.

8. Enjoy a soothing soak at Makkari Onsen (まっかり温泉), where the outdoor bath offers stunning views of Mt. Yotei. The entrance fee is only 600 yen at the time of writing.

Along the trail, you'll encounter diverse ecosystems brimming with a rich array of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
