Kyogoku (京極町) is a town located in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Located at the eastern foot of Mt. Yotei, the town is celebrated for its pristine spring waters. Its name honors Takanori Kyogoku, the town's founder, who established the community in 1897. A former nobleman of the Kyogoku clan, he was also the head of the Marugame Domain, now known as Kagawa Prefecture.

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Kyogoku. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover in the town. The colored version of the manhole cover is located near the Kyogoku Roadside Station.

2. Visit the Kyogoku Hachiman Shrine (京極八幡神社). It’s the main shrine of Kyogoku. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Bike going to Bouyo no Oka (望羊の丘). Cars aren’t allowed here so that’s the best way to explore this place. This area has an amazing view of Mt. Yotei.

4. Ski at Kyogoku Chomin Ski Area (京極町民スキー場). It’s a well-maintained ski area that is perfect for beginners. What’s good about this ski resort is that it’s open until 12 PM. It’s well lit too so if you want fewer people head there late at night.

5. Pitch a tent and camp at Kyogoku Three U Park Camping Ground (京極スリーユーパークキャンプ場). This campsite is located near a hot spring resort and even a convenience store. It’s well maintained plus you also get an amazing view of Mt. Yotei on a clear day.

6. Take a dip in the onsen of Kyogoku Onsen (京極温泉). This onsen is one of the best in the area by means of affordability and cleanliness. You can avail of the 1000 yen onsen plus meal deal here which will save you a lot of money.

7. Visit Kyogoku Roadside Station, formally called Kyogoku Roadside Station “Meisui-no-Sato” (道の駅 名水の郷きょうごく). This roadside station is inside Fukidashi Park and has plenty of shops. One of the best products to buy here is their coffee jelly.

8. Try the soba of Isshinan (一心庵). The prices are reasonable, and the flavors are exceptional. They likely serve some of the best soba in the region. If you’re a coffee lover, you can opt for a set meal that includes unlimited coffee refills.

9. Hike Mt. Yotei (羊蹄山). You can you the Kyogoku Route trailhead located on the east-northeast side of the mountain. Hiking Mt. The diverse ecosystems along the trails showcase a rich variety of flora and fauna, making it a delight for nature enthusiasts.

10. Visit Fukidashi Park (ふきだし公園). This vast park is known for its delicious spring water which locals visit to refill their water. Aside from that, the park has numerous scenic spots worth checking out. The Kyogoku Roadside Station is also located in the park.
