Asahikawa Winter Festival Details

Nestled in the heart of Hokkaido, the Asahikawa Winter Festival (旭川冬まつり) stands as the region’s second-largest winter celebration, trailing only behind the famous Sapporo Snow Festival. This festival coincides perfectly with Sapporo's festivities over a vibrant week in early February, allowing adventurous travelers to experience the magic of both events, just an 80-minute train ride apart.

While Asahikawa may not hold the title of the largest winter festival, it more than makes up for it with its extraordinary snow sculptures. Each year, a breathtaking giant sculpture becomes the festival's centerpiece, serving as a stage for live music and captivating performances. A standout moment in the festival's history occurred in 1994 when a stunning replica of a Korean fortress was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest snow construction ever created.

Just a short stroll away, the Asahikawa Heiwa Dori Shopping Street extends about a kilometer from Asahikawa Station to the Asahibashi Site. This lively street is adorned with around 50 magnificent ice sculptures that are part of a thrilling competition. Watch in awe as talented sculptors carve their masterpieces during the festival's first few days. As dusk falls, these sculptures are illuminated, transforming the street into a breathtaking winter wonderland that enchants visitors of all ages.

Have you watched "First Love"? Some of the scenes were shot in Asahikawa City

I was able to experience the Asahikawa Winter Festival for the first time last February 11, 2023, which was my 467th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. During my visit, I was with the Tomamae Gang, and we had a blast,t thanks to Hasegawa-sensei, who drove us there. Hopefully, I will be able to revisit and experience the Asahikawa Winter Festival with my family.
