It all began on July 1, 1966, when the Sapporo Beer Garden opened its doors with 100 seats and a compelling promise: "Enjoy the refreshing draft beer just brewed next door!" Alongside the enticing offer of "all-you-can-drink draft beer and all-you-can-eat jingisukan for 1,000 yen," the venue quickly became popular. By late October of that year, it was already drawing attention with impressive daily sales.

In the following years, the Sapporo Beer Museum evolved rapidly. By 1967, it was open from late May through August, and visitor numbers soared. The museum's commitment to growth was evident when, in June 1968, it expanded with the Trommel Hall, which added 300 more seats. This expansion allowed the museum to accommodate increasing visitor numbers and enhance the overall experience.

My family and I visited Sapporo Beer Garden for the first time last February 4, 2023, which was my 460th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. We actually planned to eat in the Sapporo Beer Garden during our first visit to the Sapporo Beer Museum last August 17, 2022, however, it was full and we were also told that we needed reservations. That’s why we made sure to do so today. My family and I enjoyed the restaurant’s famed jingisukan and of course, I didn’t miss trying the Sapporo Beer. My only concern was that since it was an indoor venue and people cook, the smell of the smoke sticks to our hair and also our clothes. Thankfully, they provided plastic bags to secure our belongings so in the end, it was only us that smelled like jingisukan. It’s something like a “badge of honor” so it’s not really a problem. Given the chance, I would come back to have a second round.
