Kinokawa (紀の川市) is a city of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Kinokawa City was established after the towns of Kokawa, Kishigawa, Naga, Momoyama, and Uchita were merged in 2005. Due to the merger of the five towns, Kinokawa City has various industries but is still mostly centered on horticulture with products such as kiwi and strawberries being the most popular. The kanji used for its name ki (紀) has various meanings like age, period, record, law, and era. While the kanji kawa/gawa (川) means river.

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover in Kinokawa. I've seen one unique design that's common throughout the city.

2. Visit the Kokawa Ubusuna Shrine (粉河産土神社). This shrine is located inside the Kokawadera grounds. The shrine has a peacock which is believed to be a messenger of the deities. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Visit the Seishunosato Roadside Station (道の駅 青洲の里). Although it is not located along the highway, this roadside station is a convenient stop if you are driving along National Routes 480 and 24. This roadside station is a popular hanami destination in spring. Aside from that, there is also a fruit market here where visitors can buy fresh fruits harvested from the farms in the city.

4. Try the Wakayama Ramen at Chinese Noodles Urashima (中華そば うらしま). It is highly recommended by locals. However, be mindful of the operating hours as it only opens from 11 AM to 1 PM.

5. Go strawberry picking at JA Kinosato Strawberry Farm (JA紀の里いちご農園). Before visiting, check the strawberry picking schedule on their website.

6. Visit Hanaoka Seishuu Honor Memorial Park (華岡青洲顕彰記念公園). If you visit during the sakura season, the cherry blossom trees are illuminated at night. The good thing about this place is that it is near Seishunosato Roadside Station which means that parking is not an issue.

7. Take a dip at Jinzu Onsen (神通温泉). It is a natural hot spring with a high level of alkalinity. It is said to be good for the removal of toxins in the body. Aside from that, there is also a restaurant here that serves delicious “botan nabe” or wild boar nabe which is a must-try.

8. Head up to Saishogamine Peak Observation Deck (最初が峰展望台). The panoramic view here is amazing. It’s also one of the best sunset viewing areas of Kinokawa City.

9. Visit Kishi Station (貴志駅). It is popularly known for its cat station master named Tama. Aside from that, you would also notice that the façade of the station is shaped like a cat. If you can’t get enough of Tama, you should also try the coffee at Tama Café inside the station.

10. Visit Kokawadera (粉河寺). It’s an 8th-century temple with a vast temple ground and historic buildings. It is also temple #3 of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.
