10 Things to Do in Teshio

10 Things to Do in Teshio

Teshio (天塩町) is the northernmost town in the Rumoi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The takes its name from the Ainu Teshi-o-pet, which means “river with beams”.

For those planning to visit Teshio to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Teshio:

Teshio Manhole Covers

1. Take a picture of Teshio’s manhole covers. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common and can be seen around Teshio town proper. There is also a colored version of this manhole cover which is displayed inside Teshio Onsen Yubae. Aside from that, there are also two Gundam manhole covers and the Teshio Pokemon manhole cover featuring vulpix and Alolan vulpix running on a road.

Teshio Roadside Station

2. Visit the Teshio Roadside Station and buy products that are made from Teshio. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet. If you are into manhole covers then you would see the  Teshio Pokemon manhole cover and one of the special Gundam manhole covers installed near the entrance.

Teshio Itsukushima Shrine

3. Visit the Teshio Itsukushima Shrine. You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.

4. Witness lion dancers and impressive shrines paraded around town during the Teshio Itsukushima Shrine Festival every July 16-18.

Kawaguchi Ruins Recreation Forest

5. Visit the Kawaguchi Ruins Recreation Forest. There are about 230 pit dwellings in the area which shows how the people lived during the post-Jomon period.

Teshio Kagaminuma Seaside Park Camping Grounds

6. Stay for the day and camp at the Teshio Kagaminuma Seaside Park Camping Grounds. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one of the cabins here.

Kagaminuma Seaside Park

7. Enjoy a relaxing stroll around Kagaminuma Seaside Park. There is a playground here for children and a campsite if you want to stay overnight.

Shijimi Ramen

8. Try the Teshio clams / Shijimi Ramen from one of the restaurants in Teshio.

9. Take a dip in the onsen of Teshio Onsen Yubae. They offer a very affordable day bath. However, the onsen has a distinct smell that might not be appealing to some. Regardless, it is believed to be effective against skin diseases. Aside from that, one of the Gundam manhole covers is installed at the entrance of the building.

10. Learn about the rich history of Teshio from the Teshio History Museum. Aside from the numerous displays inside the museum, the building in itself is a must-see.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Teshio gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this historic northern coastal town soon.
