10 Things to Do in Horonobe

10 Things to Do in Horonobe

Horonobe (幌延町) is a town in the Soya Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name Horonobe originates from Poro-Nup. In the Ainu language, poro means large, and nup means grassland, thus meaning a large uncultivated land.

For those planning to visit Horonobe to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Horonobe:

Horonobe's manhole cover
Horonobe manhole cover

1. Take a picture of Horonobe’s manhole cover. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common and can be seen around Horonobe town proper.

Kaneda Shin Museum

2. Visit the Kaneda Shin Museum (幌延町金田心象書道美術館) and see dozens of calligraphy on display.

Horonobe Shrine

3. Visit the Horonobe Shrine. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. You can also get a goshuin here.

Otonrui Wind Farm

4. Drive along the scenic Route 106 and take photos of the Otonrui Wind Farm. On a clear day, you would also see Rishiri Island.

Horonobe Town Observatory

5. Head up to the Horonobe Town Observatory to see a nice panoramic view of the town.

Horonobecho Higashigaoka Ski Area

6. Ski at Horonobecho Higashigaoka Ski Area. It’s a small ski place but is easily accessible from town.

Furusatonomori Forest Park Camping Ground

7. Stay for the day and camp at the Furusatonomori Forest Park Camping Ground. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one of the cabins here. If you visit in spring, you can see the beautiful seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms, moss phlox, and white birch.

Sarobetsu Plain from Horonobe Visitor Center

8. Explore Sarobetsu Plain while walking on the elevated wooden walkway from the Horonobe Visitor Center. You can also go up to the Horonobe Visitor Center Observatory for a panoramic view of the marshland.

Yumechisokan

9. Learn about radioactive waste disposal at Yumechisokan. There are many exhibits that even children can enjoy, such as an observation tower 50m above ground, an elevator that simulates the experience of traveling 500m underground, and a 3D exploration of a research tunnel 350m underground.

Tonakai Reindeer Farm

10. Visit the Tonakai Reindeer Farm and try the reindeer sledding experience in winter. There is also a restaurant here that offers Duck Miso Ramen. The duck is said to come from Sarobetsu.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Horonobe gave you an idea and inspiration to visit the town in the future.
