Japan Diaries 4: Day 257

Day 257: July 16, 2022

Saturday - Haboro Day Trip

It's another weekend. It means it's an opportunity to visit and explore another town. For today's trip, we're off to the town of Haboro (羽幌町).

On the bus going to Haboro

Although I regularly visit Haboro High School, it will be my family's first time traveling to this beautiful town. It's also their first time riding the Horonobe Rumoi Line of the Engan Bus. For this trip, each of us had our own 1-day Moekko Free TicketWe boarded the 9:24AM bus at the Motokawa-cho bus in Rumoi City and arrived at the Haboro Engan Bus Terminal at 10:56AM.

Haboro Rest Park

After a quick toilet break inside the bus terminal, we walked to the nearby Rest ParkThe Rest Park was once part of the Japan National Railway Haboro Line which was discontinued in 1987. It is now repurposed and serves as a place to relax for locals and those who visit Haboro.

Brick Agricultural Cooperative Warehouse

Walking to our next destination

Nearby is the picturesque Brick Agricultural Cooperative Warehouse / JA Rumoi material store/agricultural warehouse. This warehouse reminds me of the Kumatori Exchange Center Rengakan in Osaka. I just took a photo of the structure as it does not accept visitors.

Koryosanmeitoku Temple

From there, we walked towards the Haboro Rose Garden. We stopped at Koryosanmeitoku Temple along the way. We took some photos and explored its grounds before proceeding to the rose garden.

Crossing the bridge going to Haboro Rose Garden

Haboro Rose Garden

The Haboro Rose Garden is about 10 minutes away. I visited it last March 20, 2022, during my solo road trip going to Wakkanai. However, at that time it was still very much covered in snow so I couldn't enjoy it. During this visit, most of the rose bushes were already in full bloom. The garden is filled with roses of different colors and emits the distinct aroma of rose flowers. 🌹🌹🌹

Hokkaido Seabird Center

My family was very excited to see what the Hokkaido Seabird Center has to offer.

Can you count how many birds there are in this part of the museum?

Ella: Can we bring these home?

I learned something new about the Great Auk - an extinct seabird

Just beside the Haboro Rose Garden is the Hokkaido Seabird Center which is a museum dedicated to seabirds. It is the only one of its kind. Like the rose garden. I also visited this place last March 20. I can safely say that visiting it now is more enjoyable as I have my wife and daughter along with me. It's fun watching them learn about seabirds as we live in Rumoi City which is a coastal city frequently visited by seabirds. 🐦🐦🐦

Haboro Sunset Onsen Plaza / Haboro Roadside Station

Ororon Cafeteria

I tried the kaisendon (2500 yen)

Kaisendon

After visiting the Hokkaido Seabird Center, we decided to eat lunch at Haboro Onsen Sunset Plaza but it queue was a bit long so we looked for another place to eat. We ended up at Ororon Cafeteria. The place was famous for families and bikers and I found out that it is known for its kaisendon (2500 yen) which I tried of course. My wife and daughter, on the other hand, tried the seafood curry (750 yen).

Tiara

Soft cream of Tiara

My daughter Ella liked Tiara's soft cream but my wife and I liked the cream puff

Tiara Haboro
Tiara is just in front of Haboro Sunset Onsen Plaza

Lunch wouldn't be complete without dessert so we headed to the nearby Tiara and bought soft cream (330 yen) and cream puff (100 yen each).

Marine Day

Haboro Onsen

From there, we went to Haboro Onsen Sunset Plaza and availed of the day tour onsen. We were lucky as we visited during the hotel's "Onsen Day" which means onsen usage is discounted.

Waiting for the bus at Engan Bus Head Office Terminal

Had we brought our car, we would have stayed longer but our trip is based on the bus schedule. With that said, we left Haboro aboard the 5:09PM Engan Bus at Engan Bus Head Office Terminal to the Motokawa-cho bus stop near our place. Upon arriving home, we spent the rest of the night binge-watching Season 4 of Stranger Things

Overall, it was a memorable 257th day. I got to revisit and tour Haboro but this time with my family. Since we already have our car, I hope that our next trip will be somewhere farther. See you on our next road trip guys!
