Japan Diaries 4: Day 195

Day 195: May 15, 2022

Sunday - Asahikawa City Overnight Trip Day 2

This is it! The last day of our 2-day Asahikawa Overnight Trip. Most people would probably feel sad as it is almost time to go home but in our case, we were actually looking forward to this day because of the buffet meal at Hotel Amanek.

It's a beautiful morning in Asahikawa - view from Hotel Amanek

Hotel Amanek
My favorite! I probably ate a ton of these.

My wife and I actually chose Hotel Amanek not only because it was near Asahikawa Station but also most importantly because of its breakfast buffet. Speaking of which, I probably ate one too many sashimis and jingisukan that I had to lock myself in the toilet until almost check-out time.

Left our luggage at JR Asahikawa Station

After the sumptuous meal, we went back to our room and rested for an hour. When everything was ready, we checked out of Hotel Amanek a little before 10AM. From there, we headed to the baggage locker area of JR Asahikawa Station to deposit our luggage for safekeeping and also for another hassle-free exploration of the city. Surprisingly, this only costs 500 yen.

We rode the bus to our next destination

Mega Don Quixote Asahikawa

We then went to the platform 2 bus stop and boarded bus #103 Suehiro Circulation Line (末広循環線) to the Hanasakicho 6-chome bus stop. From there, we walked for about 2 minutes to Mega Don Quixote. It was paradise for my wife as she has tons of things that she wanted to buy. That's why she decided to stay behind while Ella and I went on for the next leg of the adventure.

Ella and I walked to Hokuchin Memorial Museum

Ella and I explored Hokuchin Memorial Museum (entrance is free)

Ella and I walked from Mega Don Quixote to the Hokuchin Memorial Museum which is about 1.6 kilometers. The museum is free and has so many displays that my daughter and I felt that we were experts on the topic of the 7th Division of the Imperial Army so it's worth the long walk.

Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine
Our next stop is just across the street

Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine

From there, we crossed the street and headed to the nearby Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine. Aside from the beautiful shrine, we enjoyed its vast grounds, particularly the pond area.

Next stop: Nenposhinkyoasahikawanenho Temple

Side trip to Mister Donut Asahikawa Shunko Store for some snacks

Asahikawa City
Time to go back to Mega Don Quixote

We didn't stay long as we have to save my wife (and our savings) from Mega Don Quixote. Although it might sound like an urgent thing, my daughter and I weren't in a rush so we had some stopovers at Nenposhinkyoasahikawanenho Temple and then at Mister Donut Asahikawa Shunko Store for snacks.

Grocery shopping at Mega Don Quixote Asahikawa

I got 3 new KitKat flavors for my collection: Cheese Cake, Strawberry, White Chocolate

We arrived when my wife was in the middle of her grocery shopping so as expected we stayed in Mega Don Quixote for another 30 minutes. In a way, it was fun as there were so many products that were there that weren't in the department stores in Rumoi City. I even got 3 new KitKat flavors for my collection.

Arrived at JR Asahikawa Station. Time to go back home

We boarded the Bus to Rumoi City from Asahikawa

We returned to Asahikawa Station at around 4PM and waited for the 5:30PM Engan Bus to Rumoi City.

We arrived home at around 7:20PM which officially wraps up our 2-Day Asahikawa City Overnight Trip
