Bibai (美唄市) is a beautiful city in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name “Bibai” is derived from the Ainu word "pipa o i", meaning "a place (swamp) with many cockscomb pearl mussels". It was once the main rice producer of rice in the region.

For those planning to visit the city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Bibai City:

1.  Take a picture of the manhole cover of Bibai. So far, I have seen 3 unique manhole covers. The first two are commonly seen around the town while the colored manhole cover can be seen near the Sakurai Family Residence. 


Sorachi Shrine (空知神社)

2. Visit the Sorachi Shrine (空知神社). It’s the main shrine of Bibai City. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Stroll around Wada Park (和田公園). This spacious park has a pond and a walking path around it. There’s even a bicycle training park nearby. It’s best to visit during the autumn as the foliage adds beauty to the park.

4. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Garo Family Park Camping Ground (我路ファミリー公園キャンプ場). If you time your visit during the cherry blossom season then you would probably enjoy doing hanami or cherry blossom viewing while camping.

5. Visit the former Sakurai Family Residence (旧桜井家住宅) and see one of the few preserved old houses in Hokkaido. It is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of the city.

6.  Dine at Tatsumi (焼鳥 たつみ). It is a highly recommended yakitori restaurant in the city. It’s the only place where you can buy the Bibai yakitori.

7. Check out the numerous sculptures on display at Arte Piazza (アルテピアッツァ美唄). It’s one of the best places to visit if you are an art enthusiast and also a nature lover.

8.  Take a dip at the onsen of Pipa no Yu Yurinkan (ピパの湯 ゆ〜りん館). You may choose to try the day trip option or stay overnight. This onsen hotel has an indoor and outdoor hot spring. You would probably like the illuminated outdoor onsen at night locals refer to as “The Cave”.

9. Explore Tomei Park (東明公園) during the cherry blossom season and enjoy strolling around the vast park while admiring the beautiful sakura trees.

10. Visit the Bibai City Local History Museum (美唄市 郷土史料館). This museum has plenty of exhibits that showcase the rich history of the city.
