At the heart of this remarkable natural phenomenon lies the remarkable display of sulfur springs, which gush forth with astonishing force. Located at the bottom of the pond, these springs emit temperatures of about 130 degrees Celsius, making it a truly remarkable sight to behold. Even the surface temperature of the pond ranges from 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, giving it a striking grayish-black color, akin to a bewitching cauldron. In the past, this mysterious phenomenon allowed for the extraction of "sulfur," a valuable resource collected from the bottom of the pond.

My family and I visited Oyunuma Pond for the first time last October 9, 2022, during our “October 8-10” Road Trip. It was my 342nd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Oyunuma Pond was one of the places that we visited in the area. We wanted to fully explore the area but it rained and we booked a hotel in Muroran City. Given the chance, we would come back and stay in a nearby hotel to really maximize our experience.

However, if this is not an option you may follow this one. Heads up, this is one of the many ways to get to Oyunuma Pond. However, this is the one which I'm familiar with.

Upon arrival, transfer to the "Regional Center Building → Horobetsu Honmachi → Noboribetsu Station → Noboribetsu Onsen Route" Bus at the Noboribetsu Bus stop.
