10 Things to Do in Shiraoi

Shiraoi (白老町) is a charming town nestled in the Iburi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan, where the richness of its cultural heritage is as vibrant as the landscapes that surround it. According to the town's official website, "Shiraoi" is an Ainu word that symbolically translates to "rainbows." This linguistic nuance reflects the town's diversity and perhaps the colorful spirit that defines its identity.

However, alternative etymologies persist, suggesting that the name might also have roots in "shiraunai," signifying "horse-flies". The dual interpretations add an intriguing layer to Shiraoi's history, leaving room for contemplation and exploration. The town is known for the Shiraoi beef and its chicken farms. It is also known for its shiitake mushrooms.
