What Is Trick Art?
Trick art is a fascinating genre of optical illusion that uses visual tricks to create the illusion of three-dimensionality on a flat surface. These artworks appear to change depending on the viewer’s perspective, giving the impression of depth, movement, or even interactive scenes. My family and I visited the Kamifurano Trick Art Museum for the first time last March 21, 2023, during our Vernal Equinox Holiday Road Trip. It was my 505th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was actually the highlight of the road trip, as most of the places that we planned to visit were still closed, since it was still winter. My family and I enjoyed posing for pictures with the numerous trick art displays. I highly recommend this place if you’re visiting Kamifurano in winter.

The admission fees for the Trick Art Museum are as follows:
- Adults: 1,300 yen
- Junior and Senior High School Students: 1,000 yen
- 5th Grade and Above 700 yen
- Children in 4th Grade and Below: FREE
- Disabled Visitors:
1. Adults: 1,100 yen
2. Junior and Senior High School Students: 800 yen
3. One accompanying person with a disability: Free

Kamifurano Trick Art Museum Operating Hours
The Kamifurano Trick Art Museum is open from 10 AM to 5 PM (July-August 10 AM -6 PM).
The Kamifurano Trick Art Museum is also open during the winter months, from December to March. It operates on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, with visiting hours from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The museum is closed on weekdays and during the New Year holiday period (December 31st, January 1st, and January 2nd). Please note that the last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

Take a JR Limited Express train from Sapporo Station to Furano Station.

- Fare: ~¥4,500 (one way)
- You may need to transfer at Takikawa Station, depending on the schedule.
From Furano Station, take a taxi to the Kamifurano Trick Art Museum.
- Distance: ~10 km
- Travel time: ~20 minutes
- Taxi fare: ~¥2,000–3,000
Option 2: By Train and Bus (Budget-Friendly)
- Follow Step 1 above to reach Furano Station.
- From Furano Station, take the local bus heading to Kamifurano.
- Check the bus schedules, as they may be infrequent.
- Alight at a bus stop near the museum (confirm with the driver).
- Walk from the bus stop to the museum (walking distance depends on the bus route).
Option 3: By Car (Most Flexible)
If you prefer more freedom with your schedule:
- Rent a car in Sapporo and drive to Kamifurano.
- Distance: ~140 km
- Travel time: ~2.5 hours
- Enjoy the scenic route through Hokkaido's countryside, especially if visiting in summer or autumn.
