The museum is part of a growing trend in Japan, where trick art museums have become a popular way to experience art through play. These museums combine creativity with illusion, allowing people to step inside the artwork and interact with it—transforming the viewing experience into a dynamic, participatory adventure. When the Trick Art Museum was first established, it was under the guidance of Kazumune Tsurugi, a pioneering figure in the world of trick art, who played a key role in crafting many of the museum’s original displays. His work laid the foundation for the museum’s continued success and innovation in this art form.

What Is Trick Art?
Trick art is a fascinating genre of optical illusion that uses visual tricks to create the illusion of three-dimensionality on a flat surface. These artworks appear to change depending on the viewer’s perspective, giving the impression of depth, movement, or even interactive scenes. The magic of trick art lies in its ability to challenge the way we perceive space and form, often leaving visitors in awe of the artistic craftsmanship behind the illusion.
Kamifurano Trick Art Museum Exhibits*
* I posted only a handful of photos of the exhibits and I purposely didn't label them so that you would only get a glimpse of what Kamifurano Trick Art Museum has to offer. Please visit it and enjoy it with your own eyes.
At the Kamifurano Trick Art Museum, these artworks are not meant to be passively observed; they are designed to be touched, explored, and most importantly, photographed. As visitors pose and play with the exhibits, they become part of the artwork itself, capturing moments of fun and surprise. This participatory aspect makes trick art an ideal experience for visitors of all ages, from children to adults, as they immerse themselves in a world where art and reality beautifully collide.
Team Nicerio visits the Kamifurano Trick Art Museum
My family and I visited the Kamifurano Trick Art Museum for the first time last March 21, 2023, during our Vernal Equinox Holiday Road Trip. It was my 505th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was actually the highlight of the road trip, as most of the places that we planned to visit were still closed, since it was still winter. My family and I enjoyed posing for pictures with the numerous trick art displays. I highly recommend this place if you’re visiting Kamifurano in winter.
