Miyajima (宮島) formally called Itsukushima (厳島) is an island in the Seto Inland Sea under the jurisdiction of Hatsukaichi City of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The kanji used for its name is miya (宮) means palace and shima (島) means island. Although it is referred to by the locals as “Shrine Island”.

1. Welcome the deer that greet visitors at Miyajima Matsudai Kisen Ferry Terminal (松大汽船フェリー乗り場). You'll also encounter them throughout the island. While they're generally docile like the deer in Nara, occasionally they may display aggressive behavior, especially if they're hungry. Be cautious, as there have been instances where they've bitten or taken paper or food from visitors.

2. Take pictures of the less crowded Nagahama Shrine torii gate (長浜神社鳥居). It’s a smaller version of the island’s famed Floating Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Aside from that, it’s closer to the beach so you have a higher chance of walking to the shrine.

3. Explore the Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street (宮島表参道商店街) and buy souvenirs or try some unique food sold there like grilled oysters.

4. Try the gelato at Baccano. There is a plethora of flavors to enjoy. Just a heads-up though, the store is located in an alley so you might miss it make sure to look for the shop sign or board that’s displayed outside the store.

5. Visit the Senjokaku Pavilion (千畳閣社). For a small fee, you can go inside this wooden Momoyama period shrine. Make sure to remove your shoes and put them in the shoe cabinet before going inside the shrine.

6. Take a leisurely walk through Momijidani Park (紅葉谷公園), renowned for its stunning maple trees that make it a favorite destination during autumn.

7. Ride the Miyajima Ropeway (宮島ロープウェイ) from Momijidani Station to Kayatani Station before transferring to the larger ropeway to Shishiiwa Station.

8. Hike to the peak of Mt. Misen (弥山) and go to the Mount Misen Observatory (弥山 展望台) to enjoy the view of the island, the Seto Inland Sea, and the cities across it. You can use the Miyajima Ropeway to make your trip easier.

9. Visit the famed 16th-century Itsukushima Shrine (嚴島神社) and explore the shrine complex. If you’re collecting goshuin then don’t forget to include the Itsukushima Shrine goshuin in your collection.

10. Plan your visit to coincide with low tide, allowing you to stroll to the Floating Torii of Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社大鳥居), also known as "The Great Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine." If walking isn't feasible, consider taking a ride on the Rokai Bune or Roaring Boat, a guided rowing tour that passes through the Great Torii Gate.
