Daraga Church Revisited 2021

The last time I visited Daraga Church was during the 4th day of our CamSur - Albay Road Trip last 2014. Since that's almost a decade ago, I made sure to include it in our itinerary for the 8th day of our 2021 Bicol Road Trip.

Daraga Church details

For those who are unfamiliar with Daraga Church, it is located in Santa Maria Street, Daraga in the province of Albay. The church is formally called Nuestra Senora de la Porteria Parish Church (Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church).

Daraga Church was built under the supervision of the Franciscans sometime in 1773. the church was placed under the patronage of the Our Lady of the Gate.

The church facade is known for its Churrigueresque architectural style. It was built using materials that are abundant in the area like volcanic rock, wood, and nipa. Currently, the distinctive white facade of Daraga Church is the result of lime coating which was applied to protect it from deterioration.

Daraga Church was not spared from the horrors of World War 2. It sustained heavy damage during an American bombing raid sometime in 1945. After the war, the locals hastily renovated it using a mix of Mexican Baroque and Renaissance Gothic styles. The church was then redesigned from 1971 to 1973 to follow the norms of the Vatican II council.

In 2007, parts of Daraga Church are listed by the National Museum of the Philippines as National Cultural Treasure. These are; the church's eastern and western facade, belfry, and baptistery.

Why visit Daraga Church?

Daraga Church is one of the most beautiful Spanish colonial-era churches in Albay. It is also one of the best places to view the majestic Mayon Volcano. You should include Daraga Church in your upcoming Visita Iglesias.

Getting to Daraga Church:


Ride a bus heading to Legazpi City. Inform the conductor to drop you off at Daraga near the church. Once there, you can either walk up the church or ride a tricycle.

Located in Barangay San Pedro in Sto. Tomas in the province of Batangas, the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio is a pilgrimage site dedicated and inspired by Saint Padre Pio. Located in the heart of Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto Station  ( 京都駅 ) is one of Japan 's largest train station buildings. It serves as the main gateway for locals and foreigners coming in and out of the city. Kohfukuji - Nara

Located in 48 Noboriojicho, Nara City in Nara Prefecture, Kohfukuji  ( 興福寺 ) is a Buddhist temple that serves as the national headquarters of the Hosso school of Buddhism.  Kohfukuji  ( 興福寺 ) Kohfukuji History Kohfukuji or simply Kofukuji was established in 669 by Kagami no Okimi in the hopes that it would please Buddha, which in turn, would help her husband Fujiwara no Kamatari recover from his illness.  The first temple was built in Yamashina, Yamashiro Province which is in present-day Kyoto. Nara Park Revisited 2019 - Nara

The last time we visited Nara Park  ( 奈良公園 ) was on the 16th day of our 2014-2015 Japan trip . That was also our first time to see this world-famous park with our own eyes. Nara Park  ( 奈良公園 ) For those who are not familiar with Nara Park , it is home to hundreds of free-roaming Sika deer . Kamay ni Hesus Shrine,  or simply Kamay ni Hesus   is a famous religious shrine and grotto. It is l ocated in Barangay Tinamnan, Lucban in the province of Quezon.
