Naganuma Shrine Details

In the 1900s, a small shrine was built in the heart of what is now downtown Naganuma. It stood as a testament to the perseverance and faith of the pioneers who established it. Over the years, the shrine underwent significant changes, eventually finding its new location on a hill at Kita 5, Higashisansen Line. Naganuma Shrine holds deep historical and cultural roots, serving as a spiritual sanctuary for the locals and tourists alike.

In June 1912, Naganuma Shrine was moved to its present location. It was established to honor the branch spirit of Kanpei Taisha Sapporo Shrine. The pioneers built a shrine building and held a solemn memorial service. This marked the beginning of Naganuma Shrine's journey to becoming a significant religious center in the region.

Naganuma Shrine received official permission to be established as a village shrine in July 1920. This new designation ensured that it had the authority to provide important services to its community. The shrine's prominence grew as it began playing an integral role in the spiritual and social fabric of Naganuma.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the village's inception, construction of the main shrine began in 1939. Inspired by the original Karafuto Shrine design by the Hokkaido Government Agency, the majestic Shinmei-zukuri shrine building was completed in 1945. This architectural gem became the focal point of the shrine, radiating a sense of grandeur and sacredness.

My family and I first visited Naganuma Shrine last October 8, 2022, during our “October 8-10” Road Trip. It was my 341st day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. My family and I visited the shrine as part of our family tradition of visiting the municipality's main shrine, which we will visit for the first time. During our visit, we offered prayers and also paid our respects.
