Another charming attraction at Ban’ya no Yu is Yuki-chan, the resident capybara who enjoys soaking in the onsen just like the guests. Watching this adorable creature relax in the warm water adds a heartwarming touch to the experience and is a favorite among visitors, especially children.

However, while Yuki-chan is undeniably cute, I couldn’t help but feel that she might be a little lonely. Capybaras are naturally social animals that live in groups, so it would be nice if she had a companion to share her onsen time with. I know there were two before, but now she's alone. Still, seeing her peacefully resting in the warm bath perfectly captures the relaxing spirit of Ban’ya no Yu.

• Tattoos are not permitted. Guests with tattoos will be asked to leave, and admission fees will not be refunded.

Team Nicerio visits Ban'ya no Yu

My family and I visited Ban’ya no Yu for the first time on November 23, 2023, marking my 752nd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Although it was a long drive from our home, the fact that it was located near COSTCO gave us extra motivation to make the trip. The hot spring bath at Ban’ya no Yu was incredibly relaxing, and watching Yuki-chan, the capybara, enjoying her own onsen dip added a playful and memorable touch to our visit.

From Sapporo Station, head to the Sapporo Terminal. Take the Chuo Bus Ishikari Line and get off at Ishikari Onsen-mae.
