Sula Bridge details

According to some sources online, the history of the Sula Bridge could be traced back to the 1950s when former senator Tecla San Andres-Ziga originally visualized and initiated building a bridge that would connect the Cagraray Island to the province of Albay. This was in hopes of boosting the economy and tourism of the island. Sadly, the construction of the Sula Bridge did not materialize during her term and was shelved for several decades.

In the 1980s, then-Representative Edcel Lagman also pushed for its construction but like that Senator San Andres-Ziga's plan, it was also shelved for decades. He did not give up though until Sula Bridge was finally built during the time of former President Arroyo.

The construction of the Sula Bridge costs around 150 million pesos. The bridge was finally opened to the public in 2013.

At present, the two-lane modular steel bridge with steel decking not only serves its purpose to connect Cagraray Island to the mainland of Albay to boost its economy and tourism, but it has also in itself become a tourist destination. Hundreds of tourists, particularly bikers, would usually make this bridge as a stopover destination or pitstop during their rides to Cagraray.

We got to visit Sula Bridge during the 2nd day of our Bicol Road Trip 2021. Although we got to stay briefly, it was totally worth it.

Why visit Sula Bridge?

As mentioned, Sula Bridge not only serves its purpose of connecting the island of Cagraray with mainland Albay, it also serves as a tourist spot in itself. The bridge also offers a stunning view of the Sula Channel. Hence, please don't forget to stop by for a bit when passing through and take a photo or two and of course please do enjoy the view.

Getting to Sula Bridge

From Legazpi Airport, you can reach Sula Bridge by taxi. However, the 40 min to 1-hour taxi ride would surely cost you a lot.
