Diosdado Macapagal Bridge was completed in May 2007. The bridge is three kilometers long and connects the Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Road and the Philippine-Japan Friendship Bridge.

Thanks, Japan!

Heading to Butuan City from Cagayan De Oro

The bridge was a project funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation for the people of Butuan. However, it took several years before the project started (three presidential terms to be exact). It was lobbied to former President Ramos, then was approved by former President Estrada, and finally implemented during the time of former President Arroyo. (Talk about a very charitable neighbor country. Thank you Japan!)

Checking out the bridge

Despite the setbacks, the bridge made a big difference to the life of the people of Butuan. Not only did it lessen the traffic, but it also made transportation of products and goods to other provinces easier. Aside from that, the bridge adds up to the number of tourist spots that you could visit in Butuan. You would love the view of the Agusan River from the bridge and vice versa.

We parked our truck in the middle of the bridge to take some photos.

The Backpack Adventures visits Diosdado Macapagal Bridge

Having a figurative and literal symbolism, Diosdado Macapagal Bridge stands as the symbol of the "connection and friendship" between the people of Japan and of the Philippines. It also symbolizes the path to improvement and economic stability for the Filipinos.

I got to visit and cross Diosdado Macapagal Bridge twice during the 2-day 10 Wheeler Truck Mindanao Road trip with my father-in-law.

Why visit Diosdado Macapagal Bridge?

Diosdado Macapagal Bridge might not be a tourist spot but it's a must-see as it is currently the longest bridge in Mindanao.

Getting to Diosdado Macapagal Bridge:

From Manila, board a flight to Bancasi Airport in Butuan City. From there, taxis or vans could be rented to bring you to the bridge. Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is just a few kilometers away from the airport.

  1. Hi! I was wondering if I can use your photo of the Diosdado Macapal bridge for a marketing collateral for Gawad Kalinga's Bayani challenge. I can't find an email add so I just left a message here. Do reply if you have any questions re: usage. Thanks!
