Singapore: The Lion City



With a territory measuring only 719.1 square kilometers, Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia. Despite its size, Singapore remains the top economic power in the region.

Singapore's territory consists of one main island along with 62 other islets. Throughout the past years, the country has undergone extensive land reclamation which increased its total size by 23%.

The country gained its independence from Britain in 1963 by joining the federation of other former British territories which formed Malaysia. However, due to ideological differences, Singapore was expelled from the federation in 1965. Hence, it became a sovereign nation that year.

The local inhabitants of Singapore are generally called Singaporeans. However, they are from a diverse cultural race. Singaporeans are actually composed of Malays, Indians, and Chinese. Years back, this diversified nationality led to several race riots. However, with strong leadership started by Lee Kwan Yew, Singapore quickly moved from Third World economy status to First World affluence in a single generation.
