Weekend 122: March 2 – 3, 2024
Day 852: March 2, 2024
Saturday – Rumoi x Blizzard
| It's a -7-degree morning here in Rumoi City |
It’s just -7 degrees today, but it feels like it’s around -15. We planned to go on an onsen trip this weekend, but the weather forecast said that there would be a blizzard today. Having lived here in Hokkaido for almost 4 years, I know how dangerous driving in a blizzard can be, so we decided to cancel our plans and stay home instead.
| Blizzard experience in Rumoi City |
It was too cold to move around, so we just stayed in the living room and bonded with each other. During our free time, we made videos for our Facebook page “JapaNice Adventures,” and I was able to make some videos for future posting.
| Quick stop at Seicomart in Motokawacho |
| Next Stop: Shell Serufu |
| I bought touyu for our heater |
After lunch, I discovered that I needed to buy kerosene for our heater, as the tank is nearly empty. I braved the blizzard to drive to Shell Serufu. Thankfully, there were some brief moments when the snowstorm stopped, allowing me to make a brief stop at Seicomart in Motokawa-cho to buy some snacks.
| Karaage for lunch |
When I got home, I spent the remainder of the day taking care of Baby Kai and bonding with my daughter Ella. I also watched some documentaries about the Russia – Ukraine War on Youtube.
Before calling it a day, I started watching a new series on Netflix – “The House of Ninja.” I was able to finish one episode and was instantly hooked. Had I not been exhausted and sleepy, I would have binge-watched every episode.
Day 853: March 3, 2024
Sunday – Rumoi
| Time to head out to do some errands |
| First stop: Engan Bus Office to buy this month's Moekko Free Ticket supply |
It’s a nice morning. The blizzard has already passed, and the places that were once clear of snow are again buried in it. Although it is now possible to head out for our weekend onsen trips, we decided to cancel this week’s trip because we weren’t able to accomplish our household tasks due to the blizzard yesterday. So instead of driving out of town, we drove around town to accomplish these. Our first stop was at Engan Bus Office to buy this month’s supply of Moekko Free Tickets.
| Next stop: COOP |
| Hinamatsuri Cake in COOP Rumoi |
| Some of the promoted products for the Hinamatsuri |
| Rice and Milk subsidy coupons |
From there, we drove to COOP to buy rice. We used the “Rice and Milk subsidy coupons” given by the local government and were able to get 10 kilos worth of rice for free because of this.
| Rumoi Book Center |
| Looking for books suitable for Kai... |
| ... and Ella |
Our next stop was at Rumoi Book Center on the other side of town. We used the 10,000 yen worth of book coupons also given by the local government. Ella got some nice books, and of course, we got a Hokkaido travel guide book to help us plan for this year’s road trips.
| Quick grocery at MaxValu |
We then walked to MaxValu to buy groceries. Since we already bought most of the groceries at COOP, we didn't stay that long at MaxValu. Our last stop for the day was at Jabba Laundromat for our usual winter weekend laundry trip.
| Bonding with Kai |
We got back home around 6 PM. I cooked our favorite macaroni soup to warm up our bodies. After that, I spent time taking care of and playing with Baby Kai. Before calling it a day, I watched an episode of “The House of Ninja”.
Overall, it was a very cold weekend. We weren’t able to go out of town, but we were able to spend a lot of time with each other. I’m hoping that next week will be warmer.
