Japan Diaries 4: Week 112

Week 112: December 18 – 22, 2023
Day 777: December 18, 2023
Monday – Rumoi
It’s the start of my work week. I received an early morning email from Midorigaoka Elementary School informing me that Ella’s classes are suspended due to the blizzard and heavy snowfall.

I hurriedly looked out the window and was shocked to see how deep the snow was. I also got a message from Sengoku-sensei about the cancellation of classes at Rumoi High School. However, teachers are still expected to report to work, but if it is impossible to head out, we can use the Disaster Leave. Regardless, I still went to work as I needed to accomplish a lot of tasks that I missed when I filed for sick leave (byoinkyu) last week.

There were only a handful of teachers in Rumoi High School, but we were all busy doing something. I was able to finish the tasks that I needed to do, so I spent my time learning Japanese.
In the evening, after dinner, my wife and I did a Forensic Files marathon before calling it a day.
Day 778: December 19, 2023
Tuesday – Rumoi

It’s -8 degrees today. It’s colder than yesterday. The snowfall didn’t stop; as a matter of fact, it’s now deeper than yesterday. The school has been suspended at all levels, but as with Japanese work culture, we teachers are expected to report to work. Unlike yesterday, more than half the faculty reported to Rumoi High School today.

As for my workload today, I don’t have any collaboration work, but Sengoku-sensei and I attended the day-long Hokkaido 2023 ALT Skill Development Conference.

Like yesterday, my wife and I did a Forensic Files marathon before calling it a day.
Day 779: December 20, 2023
Wednesday – Haboro Rumoi
It was supposedly my 17th visit to Haboro High School today; however, the 6:14 AM and the 6:44 AM Engan Bus out of Rumoi City didn’t arrive at the Motokawa-cho bus stop. I had to call my Haboro High School JTE, Okumura-sensei, and my Rumoi High School supervisor, Matsuda-sensei, to inform them about this.

It was only then that I found out about the cancellation of the bus route inside the city. The only way out of Rumoi City is to walk for more than 2 kilometers to the Funaba-cho bus stop near the Rumoi Roadside Station. Matsuda-sensei called Kyoto-sensei to inform him about it and to cut a long story short, it was decided that my school visit to Haboro High School would be canceled.

As for work, classes are still suspended in Rumoi High School, which means I don’t have any collaboration work today. I spent this time updating my files and also brushing up on my Japanese studies.
Day 780: December 21, 2023
Thursday – Rumoi

It’s a sunny morning. It’s the first time for me to see the sun this week. Since I don’t have any school visits today, I’m reporting to my base school, Rumoi High School.

Day 781: December 22, 2023
Friday – Rumoi

It’s an -8 degree morning here in Rumoi City. I won’t be going to Tomamae Commercial High School today; instead, I will be reporting to my base school, Rumoi High School.
Here’s my workload for today:

3rd period – L9 P1 Take Care @ 1-56 of Matsuda-sensei
To sum it up, I only visited Rumoi High School this week as my Haboro High School visit was canceled due to bad weather. Aside from that, I also only had collaboration work on Thursday and Friday due to the 3-day suspension of classes. Regardless, it was still a productive week for me. I’m praying for better weather this weekend.
