Hozenji Revisited 2023 - Osaka

The first time I visited Hozenji (法善寺) was on December 30^th, 2014, during our first trip to Japan. During that trip, my family and I were accompanied by our Japanese friends. It was a memorable trip as it was a side trip during our Dotonbori exploration.

I revisited Hozenji on November 20, 2023, during the third day of my 4-Day Osaka Solo Trip 2023. It was also my 749th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. I was traveling alone on this trip, with Hozenji as my main destination and Dotonbori as a side trip.

A Glimpse into Hozenji’s History

Hozenji was founded around 1637 during the Edo Period. The temple enshrines Fudo Myo-o, one of the Five Wisdom Kings (Myoo) — guardians who protect Buddhist teachings. Fudo Myo-o, whose name means “Immovable Wisdom King,” is usually portrayed holding a sword to symbolize wisdom that cuts through ignorance. He is often accompanied by two attendants, Kongara and Seitaka, who stand as symbols of service and devotion.

The Unique Water Ritual

Unlike most temples in Japan, where worshipers toss coins into an offering box, visitors at Hozenji perform a distinct act of devotion — splashing water onto the moss-covered statue of Fudo Myo-o. Over the years, countless offerings of water have turned the statue into a soft, green, living figure of tranquility.

As I watched people patiently line up to pour their ladles of water, I felt a deep sense of reverence in this otherwise lively district. During my first visit in 2014, I learned from Mr. Toshi that the temple is particularly popular among businesspeople who come here to pray for prosperity. This time, during my revisit, I once again felt the same calm and spiritual energy that makes Hozenji special.

The Charm of Hozenji Yokocho

Just beside the temple is Hozenji Yokocho, a narrow stone-paved alley lined with traditional restaurants and bars. The atmosphere feels nostalgic — lanterns glowing softly, the faint smell of grilled food in the air, and the sound of footsteps echoing off the stones.

Walking through it feels like stepping back in time, especially after visiting the serenity of the temple.

Hozenji may be small, but its spiritual presence and cultural depth make it worth visiting — even if just for a few minutes. It’s a perfect side trip after exploring Dotonbori’s lively streets, offering a quiet space for prayer, reflection, or simply a moment of stillness.

Getting to Hozenji

 

Hozenji is located about 350 meters from Osaka-Namba Station. It can easily be accessed on foot.
