Day 460: February 4, 2023
Saturday – 73rd Sapporo Snow Festival D1
It's a cold Saturday morning here in Rumoi City. |
Off to Motokawa-cho bus stop |
The Motokawa-cho bus stop is covered in deep snow |
Waiting for the Engan Bus bound for Sapporo City |
Today is something my family and I have been looking forward to since last year. We are traveling to Sapporo City to enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival. We had seen numerous clips of past Sapporo Snow Festivals and were yearning to experience it ourselves.
Our home for the night - Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza |
We chose to walk to Sapporo Beer Museum from Sapporo Station as it is just 1.4 kilometers away. |
We caught the 8:30 AM Engan Rapid Express Bus from Motokawa-cho in Rumoi City to Sapporo Station. When we arrived, the first thing we did was head to Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza and leave our stuff for safekeeping.
After walking for about 20 minutes, we finally reached our destination |
We got to take photos with this cool Sapporo beer stand |
We chose the Kessel Hall as it looks more "historic" |
Waiting for the meat so that we could start our jingisukan experience |
Jingisukan |
When we arrived, Kessel Hall was packed, but owing to our reservation, everything went well. Our eating experience was spectacular. We ordered many rounds of the famous Jingisukan and were stuffed by the end. I even got to try the large beer which was large by my standard.
Can you guess where we'd go next? |
Sapporo Factory |
Inside Sapporo Factory |
This location was used as a filming site for a scene from the 2022 Japanese drama series "First Love." |
We then walked to the Sapporo Factory. I made sure to include it in t was on our itinerary because it was one of the filming sites for the 2022 Japanese drama First Love. As I indicated in a previous article, one of our travel goals for this year is to visit each of the drama's filming locations. So far, we've visited 7 of the 22 locations I've identified based on my research.
Time to check in at Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza |
Heading to our room to rest and freshen up before going out again. |
We were given Room 401 |
Inside Room 401 |
I took numerous photos of where Yu Namiki and her daughter rested after watching a concert. Speaking of concerts, there was a band on a promotional tour, so in a way, we also got to watch a concert. We also bought dessert and rested before walking back to Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza to check in. We were given room 401.
We set out once again, this time heading to Odori Park. |
The Sapporo TV Tower can be seen from a distance |
We finally got to Odori Park and this was the first snow sculpture that saw |
The 73rd Sapporo Snow Festival
There were a lot of people at the park, but happily, the Japanese had a strong sense of order. Many stick to the designated walking path. People were also positioned along the route by the organizers to keep it moving. Aside from that, there are frequent reminders concerning path safety.
Another one is that of the Embley House of Wellow |
... and our favorite Hōhei Kan |
My family and I especially loved viewing the gigantic snow sculptures with picture projection mapping since it is not only visually appealing but also gives the snow creations life. We visited each Chome in Odori Park to admire each snow sculpture. We intended to travel to Susukino to view the ice sculptures, but we didn't have enough energy, so we decided to go tomorrow instead.
Time to board the subway to head back to Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza |
When we got back to our room, we spent time resting our feet |
We got back to Sapporo Washington Hotel Plaza at around 10 PM. Before calling it a day, we made sure to take a bath first. I enjoyed soaking in the hot tub that I finished late and slept way past midnight.
