Mori Inari Shrine Details

Mori Inari Shrine boasts a history that spans over 300 years, dating back to the Shotoku era (1711-1714). Originally built near the sea by Kichiemon Kadoya, the shrine was established to protect the first settlers, who were primarily fishermen. Over the years, it has grown into a revered local shrine, holding deep cultural and spiritual significance for the community.

In 1876, Mori Inari Shrine became an official local shrine. However, it underwent significant changes less than a decade later when it was relocated and rebuilt. By 1884, the worship hall was completed, and the main hall was finished a year later. The current main hall, built in the traditional Shinmei-zukuri architectural style, stands as a beautiful example of Japan's sacred building designs, offering visitors a glimpse into the shrine's rich history and dedication to craftsmanship.

Goshuin Collecting at Mori Inari Shrine

For those interested in collecting goshuin (shrine stamps), Mori Inari Shrine offers a beautiful goshuin featuring the enshrined deity, Uka no Mitama no Kami, the Shinto goddess of food and prosperity. Collecting goshuin is a cherished practice for many shrine visitors, and Mori Inari Shrine’s stamp is a perfect addition to any collection.

On April 3, 2023, my family and I visited and paid respects at Mori Inari Shrine during the last day of our 3-day "Birthday Road Trip." This also marked my 518th day in Japan as an ALT with the JET ProgrammeAs part of our mission to complete the Hokkaido 179 challenge by visiting every municipality in Hokkaido, we make it a point to visit at least one of the main shrines in each municipality we explore.
