Kamogawa Revisited 2023 |
Kyoto, renowned for its blend of ancient charm and modern vibrancy, is home to many iconic sights. Among them, the Kamogawa (鴨川) or Kamo River stands out as a serene and captivating feature. My first visit to this picturesque waterway was in May 2018, when I visited with my wife and daughter. We explored the charming stretch near Shimogamo Shrine, and the experience left a lasting impression. Revisiting the Kamogawa on January 12, 2023—my 437th day in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) under the JET Programme—offered a new layer of reflection and appreciation. This time we visited the part of the river in Nakagyo Ward.
Kamogawa Details
The Kamogawa gracefully flows through Kyoto, dividing the city into its eastern and western halves. The segment near Shimogamo Shrine, which we first explored, is particularly enchanting. Known for its lush greenery and historic ambiance, this area provided a peaceful escape during our family visit.

Kamogawa - Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture |
Returning in January 2023, I was struck by how the river offered a different kind of beauty in winter. The crisp air and delicate snowfall transformed the riverbank into a serene, almost otherworldly landscape, offering a quiet retreat from the demands of daily life. We were able to sip coffee from the famed Starbucks Kyoto Sanjo Bridge store while enjoying the view of Kamogawa and the historic Sanjo Bridge.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Kamogawa holds a significant place in popular culture. Parts of it were featured prominently in the film My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday, where it adds a nostalgic and romantic backdrop to the story. Similarly, the river plays a key role in the anime film Hello World, further establishing its status as a cultural landmark.

Strolling along the Kamogawa, especially in the area near Shimogamo Shrine, remains a delightful experience. The riverside paths, adorned with seasonal flora and offering stunning views, invite leisurely walks. In January, the frosty air and light snowfall added an extra layer of magic to the scene.
