Moiwa Shrine (茂岩神社)
is one of the main shrines of the town of Toyokoro. It is located at 136
Moiwashinwamachi in the town of Toyokoro, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido Prefecture,
Japan.

Moiwa Shrine Details
Established in May 1899, Moiwa Shrine serves
as the spiritual centerpiece of Toyokoro’s Moiwa area in Hokkaido, Japan. When
the headman’s office was created, the first headman, Seiji Sasaki,
together with the local residents, felt the need for a sacred place of worship.
On November 3, 1899, they founded the shrine at its current location to
enshrine Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess and one of the most
important deities in Shinto belief.

Growth and Transformation Through the Years
A new shrine building was constructed in 1915,
marking the start of Moiwa Shrine’s transformation into the guardian deity
of the Moiwa community. Over time, the shrine grounds were continuously
improved, reflecting the strong faith and unity of the townspeople. Moiwa
Shrine officially joined the Association of Shinto Shrines and became a religious
corporation on March 11, 1974, strengthening its status as a center
of worship.

Traditional Architecture and Sacred Design
The present shrine building, completed in 1979, features the
Shinmei-zukuri architectural style, known for its simplicity, symmetry, and
natural wooden design. This traditional form embodies purity and reverence in
Shinto architecture. In 1984, the chozuya or temizuya (water purification pavilion) was
added, allowing visitors to cleanse their hands and spirit before offering
prayers.

A Shrine Cherished by the Local Community
Today, Moiwa Shrine serves about 1,000 households and
continues to be the spiritual heart of the Moiwa district. It plays an
important role in local festivals and traditional ceremonies that strengthen
community ties. Visitors can also receive a goshuin (shrine seal) as a
special keepsake when the shrine office is open.

Team Nicerio visits Moiwa Shrine
My family and I visited Moiwa Shrine for the first
time on November 4, 2023, which was the second day of our three-day
Culture Day Road Trip. This marked my 733rd day in Japan
as an ALT under the JET Programme. As part of our Hokkaido 179 travel goal,
we made it a point to visit the main shrine of every municipality we explored
for the first time. During our visit, we offered prayers and paid our respects,
taking a moment to connect with the local culture and spiritual traditions.
Moiwa Shrine Admission Fee
It’s FREE to enter and explore Moiwa Shrine grounds.
However, make sure to bring cash if you plan to avail of the goshuin or omikuji
of the shrine.
Moiwa Shrine Operating Hours
Moiwa Shrine grounds are open 24/7. However, the shrine
office is usually open from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Getting to Moiwa Shrine
From Toyokoro Station, you can reach Moiwa Shrine on foot in about 3.4 kilometers. Alternatively, you can take a taxi directly to the shrine.
