Sarabetsu (更別村) is a picturesque agricultural village located in the Tokachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. It is well known for its rich farmland and high-quality crops such as wheat, sugar beets, and potatoes. The village’s name is said to come from the Ainu word “sar-pet,” meaning “reed bed” or “river.”

Sarabetsu’s manhole cover designs
1. Take a photo of Sarabetsu’s manhole cover designs. I’ve seen two unique designs so far, both of which are commonly found around the village. A colored version of one of the manhole covers can be found near Sarabetsu Noson Park.
Sarabetsu Shrine
2. Visit Sarabetsu Shrine (更別神社), the village's main
shrine, to pay respects and offer prayers. It is located in the heart of the village.
Sadly, since it is unmanned, it does not have a goshuin.
Pizzarie Tuka
3. Dine at Pizzarie Tuka (ピッツェリア ツカ), known for its delicious margherita
pizza and popular with both locals and visitors. The pizzeria sits alone in a
field and is housed in a cozy log cabin. The menu offers around five pizzas,
many with vegetarian options, and there is ample parking available.
Kakko
4. Dine at Kakko (かっこう料理店), a charming and quiet restaurant nestled among farms, away from the village center. They offer a variety of must-try, delicious dishes. The restaurant is popular, so reservations are recommended. Opening days are listed on their blog. The atmosphere, scenic surroundings, and attentive service all make for a memorable dining experience.
Restaurant Asahi
5. Dine at Restaurant Asahi (御食事処あさひ), a long-established shokudo and
teishoku restaurant that has been part of Sarabetsu Village for many
years. It’s one of the oldest eateries in the region, offering an impressive
selection of dishes. The menu features a wide variety of options, including
ramen, soba, and rice bowls.
Sarabetsu Sumomo no Sato
6. Visit Sarabetsu Sumomo no Sato (さらべつすももの里). It is a charming area in Sarabetsu
Village known for its plum orchards and beautiful natural scenery.
During the blooming season, the area is covered in delicate plum blossoms,
creating a picturesque landscape perfect for strolls and photography. Later in
the season, visitors can enjoy fresh plums and locally made plum products such
as jams and juices. It’s a peaceful spot that captures the agricultural charm

Fog Viewing Point (霧氷スポット) for
a truly magical experience. This spot is renowned for its ice fog, which forms
when cold air meets the moisture rising from the ground, creating a misty,
frosty coating on the trees. If you time your visit well—typically on clear,
cold mornings—you’ll be treated to a stunning winter landscape where the trees
shimmer as if dusted with delicate crystals. It’s a serene and otherworldly
sight, perfect for photography or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of
Sarabetsu’s winter scenery.
Fukushi no Sato Hot Spring
8. Take a relaxing dip at Fukushi no
Sato Hot Spring (福祉の里温泉), a
day-use onsen ideal for unwinding after a long day exploring the village. The
day-use fee is very affordable—450 yen for adults. The changing room provides
baskets and refundable coin lockers, along with lockers for valuables. The
onsen features an indoor bath, jacuzzi, reclining bath, open-air bath, sauna,
and cold bath. Shampoo and body soap are also provided for a convenient and
refreshing experience.
Sarabetsu Noson Park
9. Bring your kids or enjoy a peaceful
moment at Sarabetsu Noson Park (更別農村公園). The park offers plenty of playground equipment, including one of
the longest slides in the region, making it a fun and relaxing destination for
