2019 Bicol Road Trip: Day 1

Image
INTROMay has always been my family's travel month. Last year, we've spent half the month exploring the Kansai Region of Japan. For this year, we decided to do a five-day road trip to the Bicol Region here in the Philippines.
The original plan was to explore the different destinations in the province of Albay, particularly those in the hometown of dad in Camalig. Aside from that, we'd also visit select places in the province of Camarines Sur and Sorsogon. We'll also use this opportunity to visit my 90+-year-old grandmother and my father's siblings who are living in Bantunan, Camalig.
In the next few weeks, I will be posting articles about each day of our family adventure and also individual articles about the different places that we have visited during that time so tag along as we spend five days exploring the Bicol Region. Day 1: May 21, 2019

The weather today is going to be perfect for our long-planned road trip according to the weather forecast. We left our residen…

Visita Iglesia Batangas & Quezon

Image
Every Holy Week, my family and I go out of town on a pilgrimage tour to visit churches as part of our Catholic culture. This is also known as Visita Iglesia. For our 2017 Visita Iglesia, we headed south to the provinces of Batangas and Quezon. Unlike the previous years where we only visit Spanish-era or historical churches, we decided to have a mix of shrines and churches in this year's Visita Iglesia itinerary.

Here's where we went on our2017 Batangas & Quezon Visita Iglesia:

Because of the distance of our house from our target provinces, our three-car convoy left home early to avoid traffic and headed to our first destination which is the St. Pio National Shrine in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. It is a quaint shrine tucked in the inner part of town. We spent almost two hours here doing the Stations of the Cross and exploring its different structures.

From Sto. Tomas, Batangas we drove to Lucena in the province of Quezon. Our convoy got separated because I followed Google Maps (whic…

Luminous Cross of Grace Sanctuary - Quezon

Image
Located in the town of Agdangan in Quezon province, theLuminous Cross of Grace Sanctuary is a Catholic tower and sanctuary built beside the town's parish church.
Luminous Cross of Grace Sanctuary HistoryStanding 120 feet tall, the Luminous Cross of Grace Sanctuary is the brainchild of Fr. Raul "Puti" Enriquez. The inspiration to build a sanctuary in Agdangan came to him sometime in 2003 during the time when jueteng (a local type of gambling)and excessive drinking plagued the small coastal town.

Collective visions and dreams of several people about the sanctuary brought together important people who played a big role in the movement to build the sanctuary in 2004. Construction took a few years and was finished in 2007. According to our guide Ms. Yam Maglaqui, the sanctuary was built through the Bayanihan Spirit of the collective effort of the locals who brought their own tools and helped with the construction of the sanctuary. The best part of it was those who were most ac…
