Every first Saturday of June, the people of Hamajima celebrate the Ise Lobster Festival. It's a thanksgiving celebration not only for the abundance of lobsters in the area which has been the lifeblood of the community but also for the bountiful catch in the area. The festival also marks the end of the fishing season. It is known for the street dances featuring locals wearing fantastic outfits and showing off their Jakoppe dance skills.

The festival moves along the coastal road and ends up at Hamajima Seaside Park where some festival activities are held. It is also here where the fireworks are set off which is the closing activity of the festival.

Hamajima Seaside Park stretches for about 400 meters. It is characterized by its clean whitish sand and crystal clear waters. Aside from the festival, the beach is also a popular camping area. It is also common to see locals fishing in and around this park during the summer. Most anglers would usually grill or barbecue their catch by the beach. As such, Hamajima Seaside Park gets pretty crowded during the summer.

My only photo on Hamajima Seaside Park

As for me, I got to visit Hamajima Seaside Park last January 12, 2022, which was my 72nd day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. During my visit, the whole of Hamajima Seaside Park was mine for quite some time as there were no tourists, foreign or locals, who were there. Well, that's because, during my visit, it was still during the off-season and Japan was still closed to foreign tourists due to the pandemic.

My favorite spot on the beach was the mini embankment at the southwestern end of the beach. There is a viewing platform there that allows you to check out the deeper end of the beach. Speaking of which, I saw a dead 2-foot shark floating beside the platform. I also saw numerous fishes of different sizes in the area.

Welcome to Hamajima

Overall, I would highly recommend Hamajima Seaside Park if you are touring Shima City in Mie Prefecture. It's a gem that only a few know. If you're planning to visit, I highly suggest June as it is the festival month of the town. Make sure to book your hotels early though.
