Otaru City Budget Day Tour Itinerary

Having recently explored Otaru City on a tight budget successfully, I wanted to share with you my day tour itinerary so that you can save time and effort in planning your trip.

Disclaimer:

1. Transportation from your accommodation going to Otaru Station is not included in this itinerary.
2. The accommodation budget is also not included.
3. The exploration time in a place is pegged at an hour per destination. However, you may opt to cut it shorter or stay longer. 
4. It is also assumed that you are traveling light.


Otaru City Budget Day Tour Itinerary

Otaru City Walking Course

8:30AM

 

Estimated time of arrival at Otaru Station from Sapporo Station.

 

8:35AM

 

Since you’re quite early and most nearby destinations are still closed, you can spend a few minutes taking photos with Otaru Station’s Welcome Bell. You can also visit the Otaru Station Tourist Information Center and ask for a map of Otaru City.

 

8:50AM

 

From the station, walk towards Otaru Canal via Chuo-dori Street.

Travel time from the station to the canal is 10 minutes.

 

9:00 – 10:00AM

 

Side trip to Former Yasuda Bank Otaru Branch and Canal Plaza Tourist Information Center.

Admission Fee: FREE

 

10:00AM

 

Cross the street to Otaru Canal from the nearby Canal Plaza Tourist Information Center.

Travel time is less than a minute.

 

10:15 – 11:00AM

 

Explore Otaru Canal.

Admission Fee: FREE

11:00 – 12:00NN

 

Walk to Nichigindori Street then continue on to Sakaimachihondori Street.

Travel time is 5-10 minutes


12:10 – 4:00PM

 

Explore Sakaimachihondori Street

LUNCH

There are plenty of options for lunch at Sakaimachihondori Street.

Walk to Otaru Music Box Museum

Travel time from Sakaimachihondori Street is about 5-10 minutes depending on where you are.


4:05 – 6:00PM

 

Explore Otaru Music Box Museum

Admission Fee: FREE

There are tons of souvenirs to buy in the Otaru Music Box Museum. Make sure you bring enough cash to buy one.

6:00PM

 

Option 1

Walk back to Otaru Station from the Otaru Music Box Museum

Travel time from the museum is 20 - 30 minutes. 

Option 2

Walk to your hotel or Air BnB and stay for the night.

  3. Thank you for this itinerary, Neil. I used it when we visited Otaru. If I may add, it's also good to visit the Otaru City General Museum Canal Museum. It's near the canal.
