Kinkakuji Revisited 2018 - Kyoto

Located at Kinkakujicho, Kita, Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture, Kinkakuji (金閣寺) is one of the 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto.

Kinkakuji History

Famously called the Golden Pavilion, Kinkakuji is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto City (and probably in the whole of Japan). The temple was built in 1397 as a retirement villa for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It was then converted into a temple after his death according to his will.

To date, Kinkakuji is one of the most visited temples in Kyoto City. Regardless of the season, this place is always jam-packed with tourists, and very rarely would you see this place free from a crowd.

The weather was better now compared to our first visit

Gotta love those little "islands" in the pond.
I was lucky enough to visit Kinkakuji twice already. The first was in 2014 and then recently this 2018. (You can read about my first visit to this historic temple by clicking this LINK). Very little had changed since my first visit (which is good). If there is, it is usually maintenance and restorative works of the infrastructures inside the temple vicinity.

What made my latest visit memorable was the fact that my wife and daughter joined me this time. They missed visiting Kinkakuji four years ago because my wife was still nursing my daughter who was just one year old at that time and they were both resting after a whole day of exploring Kyoto City. During our latest visit, I also got the chance to get a goshuin (temple stamp) of Kinkakuji for my goshuin collection. (If you want to learn more about collecting goshuin, you can check out my article about it by clicking this LINK).

Team Nicerio revisits Kinkakuji last 2018.

Kinkakuji Opening Hours:

Why visit Kinkakuji?

Kinkakuji remains to be one of the temples that you should visit when you are in Kyoto. This temple is probably one of the most recognizable temples of Kyoto City. Aside from that, it's also one of the most beautiful. A bit of a heads up though, this place is crowded most of the time so you have to really fight for that space to get the best solo or group picture with the famed Golden Pavilion as your backdrop.

As seen in Detective Conan episode 927 - The Scarlet School Trip (Bright Red Arc)

Getting to Kinkakuji:

From Kyoto Station ride bus number 101, 111, or 205 to get to Kinkakuji.
