Bacoor Church History

Also known as St. Michael The Archangel Parish, Bacoor Church was established in 1752. Like most Spanish colonial-era churches built in the 18th century, this church started out as a humble place of worship constructed using only light materials such as nipa leaves, bamboos, and straws. The church was renovated to that of its present architectural structure from 1863 to 1870 using adobe, tegula, and believe it or not duck egg whites to bond the adobe boulders together.

Here's a little bit of history tidbit... Bacoor Church is associated with one historical figure who became part of the awakening of Filipino nationalism during the Spanish colonial era. This historical figure is Fr. Mariano Gomez. He was the parish priest of Bacoor Church when we together with Fr. Jose Burgos and Fr. Jacinto Zamora was falsely accused of treason, sedition, and taking part in the failed Cavite mutiny. They would then be sentenced to death by garrote at Bagumbayan Field (now Luneta) on February 17, 1872.  The three would, later on, be known as GOMBURZA and would serve as an inspiration to the new generation of Filipino nationalists.

Some marble slabs of influential people can still be found inside the church...

I got to visit Bacoor Church during my historical tour of Cavite. It was the first destination that I visited during the said trip. I was impressed by how the interior and facade of the church were maintained. Although there are plenty of modern things added to the church, the Spanish colonial era feels still prevails.

  2. Hi Neil! Correction lang po sa date of establishment. It was January 18, 1752 when our church was created by virtue of a Royal Cedula issued by King Ferdinand VI of Spain to Governor General Ovando.

Also, the present adobe church is a result of rebuilding and enlarging the structure that began in 1863. Padre Mariano Gomes ( Gomes with an "S," not "Z" ) did this for fear that seawater was already entering the church during high tide. With the help of the first Filipino architect, Felix Rojas, the present architecture of the church was completed by 1870.
